General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan: A Biography of Sudan's Military Leader

Early Life and Education

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan attended the Sudanese Military Academy and later underwent further training in Egypt and Jordan.

Military Career

Following his graduation from the Military Academy, al-Burhan held several leadership roles within the Sudanese Armed Forces. He notably commanded the Sudanese contingent in Yemen as part of the Saudi Arabia-led coalition against the Houthi rebels. In February 2019, he became Inspector General of the Armed Forces.

2019 Coup d'état

Al-Burhan is widely believed to have been the mastermind behind the coup that overthrew President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. The coup marked a turning point in Sudan's history and paved the way for a transitional period.

Khartoum Massacre

In June 2019, following visits by al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan "Hemeti" Dagolo, to Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, Sudanese security forces and paramilitary groups were ordered to suppress peaceful protests in Sudan. The resulting violence became known as the Khartoum Massacre, which saw dozens of protesters killed and their bodies disposed of in the Nile River.

Sovereign Council

In August 2019, al-Burhan was sworn in as Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan, a transitional body established in agreement with the opposition. The Sovereign Council oversaw the transition to democratic rule.

2021 Coup d'état

In October 2021, al-Burhan led a military coup that dissolved the government and the Sovereign Council. He declared a state of emergency and announced that a new technocratic government would lead the country until elections were held in July 2023.

Personal Life

Al-Burhan is married and has three children.
