Life and Education
Abdelmadjid Tebboune was born on November 17, 1945, in Mecheria, Algeria. He graduated from the National School of Administration in 1965 and embarked on a career in government.
Early Government Career
Tebboune's initial involvement in government began in 1991 when he served as the Minister-Delegate for the Municipal Government of Algiers. From 1999 to 2000, he held the position of Minister of Communications and Culture. He later returned to the Ministry of Municipal Government as Minister-Delegate from 2000 to 2001.
Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning
In 2001, Tebboune was appointed Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, a role he held until 2002. He later resumed this position from 2012 to 2017.
Prime Ministership
On May 25, 2017, Tebboune was named Prime Minister of Algeria, succeeding Abdelmalek Sellal. However, his tenure was short-lived, as he was dismissed on August 16, 2017, reportedly due to his efforts to investigate the allocation of government contracts.
Presidency
In 2019, Tebboune entered the presidential race and emerged victorious in the first round with nearly 5 million votes (58.15%). He was sworn into office on December 19, 2019.
Tebboune's presidency was marked by ongoing mass protests. Although he attempted to portray himself as someone who had fallen victim to the regime of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, many Algerians viewed him as an insider. In a national referendum held on November 1, 2020, 66.8% of voters approved constitutional amendments limiting the president to two terms and reducing his powers.
