Saints Abon and Sennen: Martyrs and Patrons of Calasparra

Origins and Martyrdom

Sts. Abon and Sennen were emancipated slaves from Persia who embraced Christianity in Rome. They met their martyrdom during the reign of Emperor Decius in the mid-third century for their unwavering faith.

Burial and Discovery

Their remains were laid to rest on July 30th in the Catacombs of Pontianus on Via Portuensis. In the ninth century, a hagiography credited Deacon Quirinus with safeguarding their bodies. The discovery of their tomb revealed a seventh-century fresco depicting the saints.

Liturgical Veneration

The Roman Tridentine Calendar commemorated Sts. Abon and Sennen with an optional feast. In 1962, their liturgical status was elevated to a feast day.

Relics and Patronage

Their relics now reside in the Roman Church of San Marco. In Calasparra, Spain, they are revered as patron saints, with their feast day celebrated on July 30th.
