Abdulkassim Salad Hassan - Biography of the President of Somalia

Abdulkassim Salad Hassan, the former Minister of the overthrown government of Siad Barre, was elected as the new President of Somalia by the National Assembly (parliament) in the city of Arta, Djibouti. This triumphant return to his homeland was celebrated by thousands of Somalis who were tired of the horrors of civil war and anarchy. With 145 out of 238 parliamentarians voting in favor of Hassan, he gained the support of the Somali people.

Early Life and Education

Abdulkassim Salad Hassan was born in 1942 in the Somali village of Dhusamareb. He belongs to the Hawiye ethnic group. In the early 1960s, he went to Moscow to pursue his education in biology.

Political Career

Since 1973, Hassan has been actively involved in politics. He held several leadership positions until 1990 and was a long-time member of the ruling party. Even during those times, he advocated for dialogue with the opposition, a stance rejected by the former dictator.

Challenges and Support

As Somalia has been embroiled in a civil war since 1991, the country remains divided into spheres of influence controlled by various military and political groups. While Abdulkassim Salad Hassan enjoys the support of the Somali civil society, the military commanders who hold the Somali capital have refused to recognize him as the new president.

Commitment to Peace

"I will lead the Somali people to peace," declared the new president in the capital city of Mogadishu. However, not all clans in Somalia share his hopes for peace. Despite the challenges he faces, Hassan remains determined to bring stability and unity to his war-torn country.
