Biography of Abdul Ahmad Badawi

Abdul Ahmad Badawi was born on November 26, 1939. He entered government service in 1964 and held various government positions, including Minister of Education, Defense, and Foreign Affairs. In late 1999, he became the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs.

During his career, Badawi faced conflicts with the Prime Minister, particularly regarding development strategies. This led him to leave the government at one point. However, Badawi later acknowledged his mistakes and was recognized by his patron, Mahathir Mohamad.

In Malaysia, there was a change in the highest political leadership as Mahathir Mohamad stepped down as Prime Minister. After 22 years as the head of the government, the reins of power were passed on to the 63-year-old Abdul Ahmad Badawi. Known for his balanced assessments and sound judgment, it was believed that Malaysia would maintain its previous political course of maintaining close relations with Muslim states.
