Biography of Mariano Rajoy
Mariano Rajoy Brey was born in 1955 in Santiago de Compostela, the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain. He is the eldest son in a family of five sons and a daughter, with his father being a judge. Interestingly, when Mariano turned two years old, his father met the father of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the current secretary-general of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and the main rival of Rajoy's People's Party in elections.
Following in his father's footsteps, Mariano completed his law degree at the university in his hometown. His classmates recall him as a clumsy and shy young man, fully absorbed in his studies and not interested in politics. However, at the age of 22, after obtaining a prestigious government position as a real estate registrar, Rajoy became involved in politics at the request of a friend. He began by putting up campaign posters for the People's Alliance, which later became the People's Party.
In 1981, Rajoy was elected as a member of the Galician parliament. His political career gained momentum after meeting José María Aznar, the leader of the People's Party. Since 1996, Mariano has been an integral member of the Spanish cabinet, serving as the Minister of Education, Minister of the Interior, and the First Vice President.
Mariano Rajoy is married and has a son. Despite always being in second place both within his party and the government, he has remained a loyal supporter of Aznar. With parliamentary elections scheduled for March next year, Aznar has already prepared Rajoy as his successor.
