Biography of Abhijit Banerjee
Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee was born in Kolkata, India, in 1961. His father, Dipak Banerjee, was a professor and head of the Economics Department at Presidency University in Kolkata. His mother, Nirmala Banerjee, was a professor of economics at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences in Kolkata. Banerjee attended South Point School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Presidency University in 1981. He later earned a Master's degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi in 1983.
After five years, Banerjee obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in economics from Harvard University. His doctoral dissertation was titled "Essays in Information Economics." Before becoming a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Banerjee taught at Harvard University and Princeton University.
Work and Achievements
Banerjee's work primarily focuses on economic development. He, along with Esther Duflo, Michael Kremer, John List, and Sendhil Mullainathan, proposed field experiments as a methodology to identify causal relationships in economics. These experiments have become an essential element of economic research.
In addition to his teaching and research, Banerjee has been involved in various organizations and institutions. He co-founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at MIT, the Innovations for Poverty Action, and served as the President of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development. He has also been a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Center for Economic Policy Research, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Econometric Society.
Banerjee's contributions to economics have been recognized internationally. He co-authored the book "Poor Economics" with Esther Duflo, which won the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award. In 2004, he was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2009, he received the Infosys Prize, a prestigious monetary award given annually to scientists, researchers, engineers, and social scientists in India. In 2013, Ban Ki-Moon, the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations, appointed Banerjee as one of the experts tasked with revising the Millennium Development Goals beyond 2015.
