Dr. Arun Sundararajan is an Indian-American economist who is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, and the Director of Doctoral Programs at the Stern School of Business, New York University.
Education and Early Career
Born in the United Kingdom, Sundararajan earned a B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1993. He later pursued an MS in Operations Research and a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Rochester.
Research and Contributions to Economics
Sundararajan's expertise lies in the economics of digital goods and network effects. He has conducted extensive research in the areas of network science and socio-economic transformations in India. His work has identified three technological invariants – digitization, exponential growth, and modularity – that define the nature of information technology since the 1960s. These invariants have led to the pervasiveness of information goods, digital piracy, and network effects in the IT industry.
Leadership and Professional Recognition
Sundararajan is an elected member of the editorial boards of prestigious journals such as 'Management Science' and 'Information Systems Research', where he currently serves as Editor-in-Chief. He has organized the NYU Summer Seminar on the Economics of Information Technology and the Network Diffusion Workshop. His contributions have earned him several awards, including the 2010 WPP and Google Marketing Research Award, the 2008 Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Information Systems, and the 2004 Best Overall Paper Award.
