Early Life and Education

Abiy Ahmed Ali was born on August 15, 1976, in Beshasha, Ethiopia. His parents were Ahmed Ali, an Oromo Muslim, and his fourth wife, an Amhara Christian. Abiy joined the Oromo People's Democratic Organization (OPDO) in 1991 and fought against the regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam.

After the fall of the regime, Abiy served in the Ethiopian National Defense Force and participated in the peacekeeping mission in Rwanda in 1995. In 1998-2000, he fought in the Ethiopian-Eritrean War. He earned a degree in computer programming and in 2007 became one of the founders of the Ethiopian Information Network Security Agency (INSA).

Political Career

In 2010, Abiy resigned from the military and was elected to the House of People's Representatives as a member of the OPDO, part of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition. In 2014, he was appointed Director of the Science and Technology Information Center and in 2015 became Minister of Science and Technology.

In 2016, Abiy became Deputy President of the Oromia Regional State and Head of the Oromia Construction and Urban Development Bureau. In October 2017, he also became head of the OPDO Secretariat.

Prime Minister of Ethiopia

In 2018, Abiy Ahmed Ali was elected Prime Minister of Ethiopia, becoming the first leader of the country from the Oromo ethnic group. Upon taking office, he initiated a series of reforms, including the release of political prisoners and the removal of judicial immunity for government officials.

Nobel Peace Prize and Domestic Challenges

In 2019, Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for resolving the border conflict with Eritrea. However, his tenure as Prime Minister has also been marked by domestic challenges, including an attempted coup in June 2019, an economic crisis in 2020, and the outbreak of the Tigray War in November 2020.

Reelection and Continued Leadership

In 2021, Abiy Ahmed was reelected as Prime Minister, securing a second five-year term. He continues to face significant challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Tigray, tensions with neighboring Sudan, and the need to implement economic reforms to address poverty and inequality.
