Negaso Gidada: Ethiopia's First President of the Federal Democratic Republic

Early Life and Career

Negaso Gidada was the first president of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, serving from August 22, 1995, to October 8, 2001. He was elected to the presidency after President Meles Zenawi became Prime Minister upon the establishment of the parliamentary republic.

Prior to his presidency, Gidada held the position of Minister of Information. After his term as president, he was succeeded by Girma Wolde-Giorgis.

Parliamentary Career

In 2005, Gidada was elected to parliament as an independent candidate. He also served as a lecturer in history at Addis Ababa University.

Religious Affiliation

Gidada was a Protestant Christian.
