Abolhassan Banisadr: The First President of Iran
Early Life and ActivismAbolhassan Banisadr was born in 1933 in Hamadan, Iran. His political journey began in the 1960s when he joined the anti-Shah student movement. His vocal opposition to the government led to his imprisonment twice and an injury during a 1963 uprising. Forced to flee, he sought refuge in France.
Return to Iran and Revolutionary Government
In 1979, Banisadr returned to Iran alongside Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution. He held key positions in the transitional government, including Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, Foreign Minister, and later Economy Minister.
Election and Presidency
In January 1980, Banisadr was elected as the first democratically elected president of Iran after the revolution. He enjoyed widespread support, winning 70% of the vote. However, his presidency faced challenges from the outset.
Growing Conflict with Khomeini
Banisadr's secular views clashed with Khomeini's clerical authority. Tensions escalated during the Iran-Iraq War, as Banisadr was accused of mishandling the military. Khomeini stripped him of his supreme commander powers.
Impeachment and Escape
In June 1981, the parliament impeached Banisadr for opposing the Islamic clergy. The Revolutionary Guards surrounded his residence, and Khomeini removed him from office. Rumors circulated of an assassination order, but Banisadr managed to evade capture. On July 10th, he fled Iran with the help of a hijacked military aircraft.
Exile in France
Banisadr settled in France, where he has resided since. He remains engaged in political commentary, writing extensively about Iran and its affairs. His perspective as the first president has continued to shape his insights into the country's complex history and present-day challenges.
