An Advocate for the Environment and Social Justice
Early Life and EducationBorn and raised in Montreuil-Haut-Yon, France, the future political leader completed her BAC (French secondary school diploma) in 1992. She went on to study geography at Paris Diderot University, graduating in 1997.
Political and Environmental Activism
From a young age, she demonstrated a passion for social and environmental issues. She participated in campaigns for affordable housing, prisoners' rights, and the protection of birds.
Joining the Green Party
In 2001, she became a member of the French Green Party (Les Verts). She quickly rose through the ranks, joining the party leadership in 2003.
Leadership of the Green Party
From 2006 to 2010, she served as President of Les Verts. In 2010, she became the leader of the newly formed Europe Ecology - The Greens (EELV).
Minister of Housing
In the 2012 presidential election, EELV formed an alliance with the Socialist Party. After the Socialist candidate, François Hollande, won, she was appointed Minister of Housing and Territorial Equality in the first and second governments of Jean-Marc Ayrault. She held this position until 2014.
