Nikolai Zlochevsky: Ukrainian Gas Tycoon and Former Minister
Early Life and EducationNikolai Zlochevsky was born on June 14, 1966 in Kyiv, Ukraine. He served in the Soviet Army from 1983 to 1991 and graduated from the Kyiv Higher Military Engineering Radiotechnical School of Air Defense with a degree in electronic radio engineering. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he pursued entrepreneurial endeavors. Zlochevsky earned additional degrees in accounting and auditing from the International University of Business and Law and a law degree from the Odessa Law Academy.
Business Career
Zlochevsky's first business venture was Infox, a Kyiv-based company dealing in oil products. He also served as head of the management board of Ukrnefteservis from 1999 to 2000. In 2002, he founded Burisma Holdings, which is now one of Ukraine's largest independent gas producers.
In 2016, Zlochevsky established the European Forum on Energy Security in Monaco. He is ranked among Ukraine's top 100 richest individuals, with an estimated net worth of $535 million (2017).
Political and State Activities
Zlochevsky has been involved in Ukrainian politics and government. He was elected as a member of parliament in 2002 and again in 2006 and 2007. He served as chairman of the State Committee for Natural Resources from 2003 to 2004 and chairman of the State Reserve Committee in 2010.
From 2010 to 2012, Zlochevsky was Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources. He also served as deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council from 2012 to 2014.
Charitable Contributions
While serving as Minister of Ecology, Zlochevsky initiated the establishment of a bear rescue and rehabilitation center in the Synevir National Natural Park. He also supported the development of the Tourist-Art Complex "Saint Nicholas' Estate" in the Hutsul National Natural Park.
Personal Life
Zlochevsky has two daughters: Karina (born 1991) and Anna (born 1999). Karina serves on the board of directors of Burisma Holdings.
