Ada Zevin: Moldovan Artist and Art Historian
Early Life and EducationAda Zevin was born in Chişinău, Moldova, to Meir Davidovici Zevin, director of a Jewish gymnasium, and Khaia Bentsionovna Zubinskaya. She attended the Lycée Jeanne D'Arc and the Dadiani Romanian Gymnasium before pursuing painting at the Bucharest Academy of Fine Arts in 1938. There, she studied under Francisc Şirato alongside fellow artists Mihail Grecu and Fira Brick.
Return to Chişinău
Following the annexation of Bessarabia by the USSR, Zevin returned to Chişinău. She continued her artistic training at the Republican School of Plastic Arts under August Baillayre and Max Gamburd. During World War II, she evacuated to Kalmykia and Georgia, where she taught art in secondary schools.
Post-War Studies and Career
After returning to Chişinău in 1945, Zevin completed her studies at the Republican School of Plastic Arts under Rodion Gabricov and Ivan Khazov. She later attended the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute from 1947 to 1949 and the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin from 1949 to 1953, specializing in art history and theory.
Teaching and Artistic Practice
From 1953 to 1975, Zevin taught at the Republican School of Plastic Arts in Chişinău. She also worked at the State Art Museum of the Moldovan SSR and as an inspector for the Ministry of Culture. Zevin became a member of the Union of Artists of Moldova in 1956 and was awarded the Order of the Republic of Moldova in 1998. As an artist, she excelled in still life, portraiture, and landscape painting. She influenced a generation of Moldovan artists, including Ludmila Ţonceava.
Art History Contributions
Besides her artistic work, Ada Zevin was an accomplished art historian. She published several monographs on the history of art in Moldova, notably "Fine Arts of Moldova" and "National Costumes of Moldova." Her contributions to Moldovan cultural heritage are highly valued.
