Early Life and Succession

Adalbert I, born in the late 9th century, was the son of Anscar I, Margrave of Ivrea. Upon the death of his father, Adalbert inherited the March of Ivrea in 898 or 902.

Rise to Power and Support of Louis III

In 899, after the defeat of King Berengar I of Friuli by Magyar invaders, Adalbert joined the growing opposition to Berengar's rule. He became a key supporter of Louis III of Provence, who was elected King of Italy in 900. Adalbert's marriage to Gisela, Berengar's daughter, did not prevent him from backing Louis.

Betrayal and Return to Berengar

Adalbert's support for Louis III waned as he became increasingly dissatisfied. In 904, he switched allegiance back to Berengar, blocking reinforcements from reaching Louis. This betrayal led to Louis's defeat and blinding in 905.

Rivalry with Berengar and Alliance with Tuscany

After Gisela's death in the early 910s, Adalbert married Ermengarde of Tuscany. This marriage strengthened his ties with the opponents of Berengar, who was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 916. Adalbert became a leader of the anti-Berengar faction that culminated in a failed rebellion in 919.

Rise of Rudolph II and Division of Italy

In 921, King Rudolph II of Upper Burgundy invaded Italy. Adalbert and Archbishop Lambert of Milan played a significant role during Rudolph's reign, though their authority was limited to the territories they controlled. Berengar initially remained passive, but in 923, he attacked Rudolph and was defeated at the Battle of Fiorenzuola. Italy was divided between Rudolph and Berengar.

Death and Succession

Adalbert died between July 17, 923, and October 8, 924. His eldest son, Berengar I (II), succeeded him as ruler of Ivrea. Historical accounts speculate that Adalbert's territory may have also included the County of Asti.

Marriages and Children

Adalbert I married twice:

1. Gisela of Friuli (c. 880/885 - June 13, 910/January 26, 913), daughter of Berengar I and Bertha of Spoleto.

- Berengar I (II), Margrave of Ivrea

- Anscar II, Margrave of Ivrea

2. Ermengarde of Tuscany (d. after February 29, 932), daughter of Adalbert II and Bertha of Lorraine.

- Guy of Ivrea, King of Italy

- Bertha of Ivrea, Queen of Burgundy
