Olga Rostropovich: A Legacy of Music
As the eldest daughter of renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and celebrated soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, Olga Rostropovich carries the torch of her musical lineage. She leads preparations for the annual Rostropovich Festival honoring her father, set to commence in Moscow on March 27th.
Rostropovich Festival: Securing World-Class Orchestras
"It's challenging to secure such esteemed orchestras," she explains. "We need to negotiate and coordinate their schedules amidst their busy calendars, but we manage. I believe my father aids us from above. The key is to persist despite setbacks."
Financial Considerations: Balancing Budget and Quality
Despite a significant grant from the Moscow government, Rostropovich faces funding challenges. "The festival's budget is insufficient, but offering a reduced price is standard practice in competitions," she says. "We rely on ticket sales, but also the generous support of the Ministry of Culture."
Avoiding Corporate Sponsorships
"We do not seek corporate sponsorships. It requires a separate skill set, and I don't feel comfortable pursuing that avenue," Rostropovich confesses. "I have never asked for money, and I am grateful for the state's support."
Curating a Thematic Festival
"One could dedicate each festival to a specific theme, such as music composed for my father," she suggests. "However, that would limit our repertoire, and finding seven world-class cellists to perform works by Lutosławski, Penderecki, and Britten is a daunting task."
Leading the Center for Opera Singing: Ensuring Artistic Excellence
As the newly appointed artistic director of the Galina Vishnevskaya Center for Opera Singing, Rostropovich has ambitious plans. "We have invited exceptional artists and educators to join our faculty, continuing the legacy of Galina Vishnevskaya. Nurturing promising singers is paramount," she emphasizes.
Honoring Galina Vishnevskaya: A Memorial and Cultural Center
"A monument to Galina Vishnevskaya will be erected on Ostozhenka before the Center for Opera Singing for her 90th birthday in 2016," Rostropovich confirms. "A design competition will be held to create a fitting tribute to her extraordinary talent."
Family Legacy: Preserving Archives and Collections
The family archive, partially exhibited at the Glinka Museum last year, will be housed in the Rostropovich and Vishnevskaya Cultural Center. The collection purchased by businessman Alisher Usmanov and gifted to the state will remain at the Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna.
Linguistic Fluency: Thinking in Multiple Tongues
"My thoughts flow in different languages depending on the context," Rostropovich reveals. "When reading an English contract, I think in English, and when corresponding in French, French—I don't translate between languages."
Personal Connections: Moscow, Family, and Traditions
"My life has always been intertwined with Moscow, even when I wasn't physically present," she says. "I often plant birch trees near my homes as a connection to my roots. My children are curious about our history and culture—they appreciate the allure of Slavic beauty and the traditional domestic roles of Russian women."
