Amazing Twins: Adam and Neil Pearson
Adam and Neil Pearson are identical twins who both have neurofibromatosis type 1, a rare genetic disorder that has left one disfigured and the other with memory problems. Although they looked incredibly alike as infants, their appearance now starkly contrasts, making it difficult to believe they are related. Adam's face has been left disfigured by noncancerous tumors that started growing uncontrollably when he was a child. Despite undergoing 33 operations to remove the growths, Adam has permanently lost vision in one eye and has blurry vision in the other. During his school years, Adam was often ridiculed and called names like "Quasimodo," "Ugly Face," and "Elephant Man," but that did not stop him from becoming a television presenter and participating in campaigns for people with developmental disabilities. His brother Neil also suffers from the same genetic disorder, but he does not have any visible tumors on his face. Instead, Neil battles epilepsy and memory loss so severe that he sometimes cannot remember what day it is. The twins both have neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition that affects approximately one person in 3,000.
Adam's Journey to Fame
Adam has become a well-known figure on television, in the production industry, and in the acting world. He has starred in projects such as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Undateables." He also appeared alongside Scarlett Johansson in the film "Under The Skin" to raise awareness about the struggles of people with severe deformities. Last year, Adam received an invitation from a Slovak director to appear in a music video for an alternative rock band called Ciste Tvary.
A Life Full of Challenges
The twins grew up in Croydon, London, and continue to live there with their parents, Marilyn (66 years old) and Patrick (63 years old). Marilyn once mentioned that she used to look at old photos and couldn't tell Adam and Neil apart. The devastating diagnosis was made before the twins' fifth birthday, when a lump on Adam's forehead refused to go away. Further scans at the hospital revealed a tumor on his neck that was blocking his trachea. Since then, Adam has undergone multiple surgeries to remove the growths. He has been in intensive care several times.
Neil's symptoms did not initially manifest as obviously. At first, the family thought he might be able to escape his brother's harsh fate. However, the twins stood outside a youth club one day when Neil suddenly asked Adam where they were. Adam shared the incident with their mother, who attributed it to tiredness. But over the next few weeks, Neil's confusion repeated itself multiple times. He started behaving strangely, constantly asking what day it was and sleeping excessively. Doctors discovered that Neil was experiencing temporary memory loss, along with other symptoms of neurofibromatosis type 1. A year after the onset of his seizures, Neil was diagnosed with epilepsy.
Adam and Neil's Lives Today
Nowadays, Neil works as an assistant librarian at a medical school and must adhere to a strict schedule to cope with his memory problems. If he deviates from his established routine, Neil becomes confused and unsure if he has completed his tasks. Adam, on the other hand, is focused on finding his soulmate and remains hopeful about starting a family one day. His neurofibromatosis was caused by a random genetic mutation, and there is a 50% chance of passing the condition on to his future children. However, if he finds the "right" woman, Adam is open to the possibility of adoption.
