Early Life and Education

Jerzy Buzek was born in 1940 in Smolen, Poland. He attended Secondary School No. 9 in Gdansk and later enrolled at the Warsaw School of Economics, where he studied international relations but did not complete his degree.

Political Activism

Student Leader and International Engagement

In 1996-1998, Buzek served as Chairman of the Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studentów (Independent Students' Union). He also held the position of Deputy Chairman of the European Democrat Students international student organization from 1999 to 2000.

Parliamentary Career in Poland

Member of Sejm (1997-2004)

Buzek was elected to the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament, in 1997 on the electoral list of the Solidarity Electoral Action coalition. He represented the Conservative People's Party from 1998 to 2001 and the Conservative Party from 2001 to 2002. In 2002, he joined the Law and Justice party and became responsible for the party's press relations. He was re-elected to the Sejm in 2001 on the Law and Justice list from the Chrzanów electoral district.

European Parliament

Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament (2007-2009)

In 2004, Buzek was elected to the European Parliament from the Lesser Poland and Świętokrzyskie voivodeships. He joined the Union for Europe of the Nations parliamentary group. On January 16, 2007, he became Deputy Chairman of the 6th European Parliament. He was successfully re-elected to the Parliament in 2009 from the Mazowieckie constituency.
