Life and Early Career

Adrian Charles Edmondson was born on 24th January 1957 in Bradford, West Riding, Yorkshire, England. He is the second of four children born to Dorothy Eileen Sturgeon and Fred Edmondson. His childhood was spent living in various locations, including Cyprus, Bahrain, and Uganda, where his father served as a teacher in the armed forces.

Edmondson attended Pocklington School in East Riding, Yorkshire, from 1968 to 1975. He has described his education there as "hated" and considered the school's printed booklet of rules to be "an endless impertinence" to be "personally destroyed."

Despite the strict discipline, Edmondson formed close friendships and had a respected English teacher, Michael Aubrey. Aubrey encouraged Edmondson's interest in drama and allowed him to miss classes to attend theater productions.

University and Alternative Comedy

After graduating Pocklington, Edmondson enrolled at Manchester University to study drama. There, he met his future comedy partner, Rik Mayall. After graduating with a 2:1 degree, Edmondson and Mayall quickly became friends and pursued a career in the emerging alternative comedy scene.

The Comic Strip Presents...

In 1984, Edmondson joined the "Comic Strip Presents..." series, a satirical show that defined the alternative comedy movement. He became a regular alongside Mayall, Nigel Planer, and Peter Richardson.

Music Career

Edmondson's music career began with the formation of Bad News, a parody heavy metal band created for "The Comic Strip Presents...." The group released two albums and a string of singles, including the UK number one hit "Living Doll" with Cliff Richard.

Collaborations and Directing

Edmondson co-authored the book "How to be a Complete Bastard" and directed music videos for notable bands like The Pogues and 10,000 Maniacs. He also performed with The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and played the lead role in the 1985 film "Supergrass."

Television and Film

In addition to his comedy career, Edmondson has appeared in numerous television shows, including "The Young Ones" (1982-1984), "Bottom" (1991-1995), and "Holby City." He starred in the BBC soap opera "EastEnders" from 2019 to 2020 and has also appeared in various films, such as "Ebenezer Scrooge" in "A Christmas Carol" (2022).

The Bad Shepherds

In 2008, Edmondson founded The Bad Shepherds, a folk-punk band that covers classic punk and new wave songs on traditional folk instruments. The band released three albums and toured extensively before disbanding in 2016.

Personal Life

Edmondson married comedian Jennifer Saunders in 1985, and they have three daughters: Ella, Beattie, and Freya. He is a supporter of Exeter City F.C.
