Adelaide T. Lambert, Olympic Gold Medalist

Born in 1907 in Panama to Clarence Lambert and Mary Howard, Adelaide Lambert spent her childhood in the country where her father worked on the construction of the Panama Canal. Her younger sister, Catherine, was an accomplished swimmer.

Early Swimming Career

After demonstrating her talent in Panama, Lambert moved to New York City and joined the Women's Swimming Association. She qualified for the 1924 Summer Olympics but fell ill before the competition.

Olympic Triumph

In 1928, Lambert made her Olympic debut in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay for the United States, alongside Albina Osipowich, Eleanor Garatti, and Martha Norelius. The American team set two world records on their way to a gold medal.

Amateur Athletic Union Success

Throughout her career, Lambert won seven Amateur Athletic Union titles in various swimming disciplines, including freestyle, backstroke, and medley. She retired from competitive swimming after 1929.

Personal Life

Adelaide Lambert married twice. Her first marriage, in 1937, resulted in the birth of a son, Frederick Charles Schmidt III. Her first husband later passed away from cancer. In 1945, she married Carl Ballard, who died of a heart attack in the 1950s. In 1986, Ballard moved to Bremerton to live with her son and daughter-in-law.

Legacy

Adelaide T. Lambert passed away in 1996 at the age of 89. She is remembered as an exceptional swimmer and an Olympic gold medalist. Her contributions to the sport of swimming continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
