Queen Adelaide of France

Early Life and Marriage

Adelaide was born as the daughter of Count Humbert II of Savoy and Gisela of Burgundy. In 1115, she married Louis VI the Fat, King of France. The marriage was arranged as Louis, at the age of 33, desired a more peaceful life after a turbulent youth. Adelaide was not considered particularly attractive, but she was known for her piety and attentiveness.

Reign as Queen

Adelaide and Louis VI had seven sons and two daughters. Among their children were Philip the Younger, who served as co-ruler, and Louis VII, who succeeded his father as king. Adelaide's sons Robert I de Dreux and Pierre de Courtenay became founders of two notable noble families.

Widowhood and Second Marriage

After the death of Louis VI in 1137, Adelaide remarried in 1141 to Mathieu I de Montmorency, the Constable of France. They had one daughter, Adelais de Montmorency.

Retirement and Death

In 1153, Adelaide became estranged from her second husband and retired to the Abbey of Montmartre, which she had co-founded with her son Louis VII. She died there on November 18, 1154, and her tomb is located in the Church of Saint-Pierre de Montmartre.

Legacy

Adelaide's descendants played significant roles in French and European history. Her son Robert I de Dreux was the ancestor of the Dukes of Brittany, while her son Pierre de Courtenay was the founder of the House of Courtenay, whose members ruled the Latin Empire of Constantinople.
