Adhémar de Monteil was born into a noble family in Valence, France, as the son of the Count of Valentinois. He became the Bishop of Le Puy in 1077.

At the Council of Clermont in 1095, Adhémar enthusiastically embraced the call for a crusade to liberate Jerusalem. Pope Urban II appointed him as papal legate, granting him authority over the crusaders. He joined the army of Raymond of Toulouse and became their spiritual leader.

Negotiations and Leadership

Adhémar played a crucial role in negotiations with Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos. He enforced discipline among the crusaders at Nicaea and participated in the Battle of Dorylaeum.

Legacy and Influence

Adhémar's death deeply saddened the crusaders. They remembered his wisdom, guidance, and support. Legend has it that his spirit appeared during the siege of Jerusalem, urging the crusaders to repent and pray. Their victory and the subsequent capture of the city on July 15, 1099, were attributed to his intercession.
