Thomas Ken, Bishop of Bath and Wells

Thomas Ken was a prominent figure in the Church of England during the tumultuous reigns of James II and William and Mary.

Bishop of Bath and Wells

In 1684, Ken was appointed Bishop of Bath and Wells. During the reign of James II, he strongly opposed the introduction of Roman Catholic practices into the Anglican Church.

Conflict with James II

However, when William and Mary came to power in 1690, Ken refused to take the oath of allegiance to them, as it violated his religious conscience. As a result, he was deprived of his bishopric and stripped of his titles.

Life in Poverty and Literary Works

Ken spent the rest of his life in poverty and obscurity. Despite his circumstances, he remained a prolific writer. He composed numerous religious works, including "Manual of Prayers" (1674), "Morning and Evening Hymns" (1705), and "Hymns and Poems for the Festivals" (1868).

Legacy and Collected Works

Ken's writings have had a lasting impact on Anglican liturgy. His hymns and prayers are still widely used today. A collection of his works was published in London in 1721.

Death in Poverty

Thomas Ken died in poverty in 1710. His steadfast principles and unwavering faith earned him the respect of many, even those who disagreed with his views.
