Biography of Adolf Gejdůk

Adolf Gejdůk was a Czech poet and writer. He was born on August 15, 1830, in the town of Písek, Bohemia. Gejdůk showed an early interest in literature and poetry, which led him to pursue a career in writing.

Educational Background

In 1850, Gejdůk enrolled in the Real School of Prague, where he studied various subjects. He then went on to study engineering and mechanics in Brno from 1854. Later, he continued his studies in the same field in Prague. In 1859, Gejdůk completed his education and secured a teaching position at the Real School in Prague. He taught drawing and construction before moving on to become a teacher at the Higher Real School in Písek in 1860.

Professional Career and Literary Work

In 1876, Gejdůk joined the I Prague Higher Real School and became the chairman of the Union of Artists, Umělecká Beseda. This position allowed him to connect with the artistic community and further develop his literary skills. In 1877, he returned to Písek and got married.

Gejdůk maintained close ties with Slovakia and the Slovak intelligentsia, having many friends within the community. He made several visits to Slovakia and actively participated in literary gatherings and discussions. Gejdůk was also a member of the literary group called Májovci.

Throughout his career, Gejdůk wrote approximately 60 poetry collections, although most of them remain relatively unknown. His works are characterized by lyrical songs that often served as musical inspirations. Gejdůk's poems celebrate the beauty of the South Bohemian and Slovakian landscapes, as well as love for women and children.

Personal Life and Later Writings

Gejdůk's poems were initially joyful and optimistic, reflecting his happiness in life. However, after the tragic deaths of his two daughters, his works took on a more pessimistic and melancholic tone. Despite these personal hardships, Gejdůk continued to write and remained dedicated to his craft.

Adolf Gejdůk passed away on May 27, 1893, in Písek. His contributions to Czech literature and poetry continue to be appreciated, although his works may not be as widely recognized as those of some of his contemporaries. Gejdůk's ability to capture the essence of nature and emotions through his lyrical poems remains a testament to his talent and creativity.
