Biography of Adoor Bhasi
Adoor Bhasi, born as K. Bhaskaran Nair on March 1, 1927, was an Indian actor and film director. He is considered one of the greatest comedians of Mollywood, the Malayalam film industry. Adoor predominantly played the roles of sidekicks to the main characters and gained fame for his comedic performances in films from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Early Life and Education
Adoor was born in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the southern Indian state of Travancore. His father, E. V. Krishna Pillai, was a renowned humorist, essayist, and lawyer, while his mother, Maheshwari Amma, was the youngest daughter of the famous writer C.V. Raman Pillai. Adoor spent his childhood in Thiruvananthapuram, where he began his schooling. After his father's death, Adoor and his family had to move to Adoor, the birthplace of his late father. After completing his school education, Adoor returned to Thiruvananthapuram to live with his maternal sister.
Career in Acting
After obtaining a degree in chemistry from the Institute of Textile Technology, Adoor was supposed to undergo an internship in Coimbatore. However, financial difficulties forced him to abandon the internship. Adoor then worked in the capital city, but he realized that acting, which was once just a hobby, could bring him much more income. He started with amateur stage plays and later moved to radio, working with renowned Indian actors.
Adoor's career in films began with a minor role in the Malayalam movie "Thiramala." His first major role came in 1961 in the film "Mudiyanaya Puthran." This success inspired him to focus solely on acting. Over time, Adoor became one of the prominent actors of Mollywood, along with Bahadur and S.P. Pillai. He acted in more than 800 films, playing various memorable roles. Some notable films include "Karimbana," "Itha Oru Manushyan," "Kottaram Vilkkanundu," and "Lankadahanam." In 1974, he received his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his role in "Chattakkari." In 1984, he received his third state award for his role in "April 18."
Legacy
A memorial for Adoor Bhasi was built in Pathanamthitta, Kerala. The foundation stone was laid on June 12, 2009. Currently, a semi-documentary film about his life is being made in India, with actor Dileep portraying Adoor Bhasi. The film, based on the story written by B. Harikumar, Adoor Bhasi's nephew, is titled "Mareecham." Adoor Bhasi is considered one of the first Indian filmmakers to recognize the talent of Kamal Hassan. He cast Kamal Hassan in his film "Adiyapadam," which marked the beginning of Hassan's successful career.
