Adrian Mitchell was an English poet, talented playwright, and screenwriter. He was known for his involvement in social anti-war activism, alongside his creative pursuits. Mitchell was often referred to as the British Mayakovsky by renowned theater critic Kenneth Tynan. He was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards throughout his career.
Early Life and Education
Adrian Mitchell was born on October 24, 1932, in North London. His mother was a teacher, and his father worked as a leading engineer. Mitchell received his education at Monkton Combe School, where he excelled academically and actively participated in school productions. It was during this time that Mitchell began to discover his immense creative potential. After completing his studies at Dauntsey's School, he went on to study at Oxford University. There, he became the president of the university's poetry society and served as the literary editor for the magazine "Isis." Mitchell also worked as a reporter for the "Oxford Mail" before moving on to the "Evening Standard" in London.
Career and Activism
Throughout his life, Adrian Mitchell passionately responded to the horrific events of his time, such as wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and other conflict zones. He used his talent to critique and denounce these wars through his writing. Mitchell also advocated for children's rights and wrote inspiring poetry for them. The poet passed away on December 20, 2008, at the age of 76, in a hospital in North London due to a heart attack caused by a two-month bout of pneumonia. He left behind his wife, actress Celia Hewitt, three daughters, two sons, and nine grandchildren (Robin, Charlotte, Natasha, Zoe, Kathleen, Annie, Lola, Lily, and Arthur).
