Adriana Salvatierra: Bolivian Political Figure
Early Life and Political BeginningsAdriána Salvatierra, a prominent Bolivian politician, began her political journey at the tender age of 16 by joining the Socialist Movement in 2005. Her dedication to grassroots work and professionalism earned her the support of the party's youth organization, which nominated her as a senatorial candidate in 2014.
Election to Senate
At the age of 26, Salvatierra emerged victorious in the senatorial elections of 2015, representing the department of Santa Cruz. Her victory made her the youngest senator in Bolivian history. Just four years later, she ascended to the position of Senate President, becoming the youngest person to hold this post.
Presidency for a Few Hours
On November 10, 2019, Bolivia faced a political crisis that led to the resignation of President Evo Morales. In accordance with the constitution, the President of the Senate was next in line to assume the presidency. However, the President of the Chamber of Deputies had already resigned, making Salvatierra the de jure interim president.
Resignation and Asylum
Despite being de jure president for a few hours, Salvatierra never formally took office. Amidst the political turmoil, she announced her resignation and sought asylum in the Mexican embassy in La Paz, following in the footsteps of Morales. Her resignation was officially accepted by the Senate on November 14, 2019.
Controversy and Aftermath
After her resignation, Salvatierra claimed that she had submitted it before the Senate could accept it, implying that she had remained the Senate President. This assertion was later refuted by the Senate, which confirmed her resignation as of November 14, 2019. Monica Eva Copa was subsequently elected as the new Senate President.
