Adrien Lachenal
Early Life and EducationAdrien Lachenal was born into a family of lawyers in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied law at the universities of Geneva, Paris, and Heidelberg, graduating in 1874.
Legal Career
After graduation, Lachenal worked as an Assistant Public Prosecutor before establishing his own law firm. He gained recognition as a skilled orator and advocate. In 1878, he married Anne Louise Eggli, with whom he had four children.
Political Beginnings
Lachenal's political career began in 1880 when he was elected to the Grand Council of Geneva. He quickly rose through the ranks of the radical faction and became one of its most influential members.
Federal Politics
In 1881, Lachenal was elected to the Senate of Switzerland, representing the Grand Council. In 1884, he moved to the National Council, where he served as President. Following the resignation of Numa Droz, Lachenal was elected to the Federal Council and the Political Department.
Later Political Career
Upon retiring from the Federal Council, Lachenal returned to the Senate and served until his death. He also served a second term as a member of the Grand Council of Geneva from 1900 to 1913.
Legislative Reforms
Lachenal played a key role in shaping Swiss law, both at the national and cantonal levels. He advocated for the improvement of trade and customs legislation at the national level. In Geneva, he initiated the separation of church and state in 1907.
Other Contributions
Beyond politics, Lachenal also made significant contributions to Swiss society. He served on the board of the Swiss Federal Railways and the commission for the Swiss National Museum.
