Early Life and Education
Afat Gurbanli, an Azerbaijani philologist, was born on January 10, 1929, in the village of Kyzyl Shafag, Armenian SSR. He graduated from a teacher's college in Tbilisi in 1948 and later enrolled in the Faculty of Language and Literature at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute in 1949.
Academic Career
After graduating with honors, Gurbanli became director of a school in the village of Khammamly, Georgian SSR. In 1956, he returned to Baku and completed his postgraduate studies in 1959. In 1962 and 1968, he defended his candidate's and doctoral dissertations, respectively, on the topic of "Modern Azerbaijani Literary Language."
From 1959 onwards, Gurbanli served as an assistant, lecturer, associate professor, and professor at the Department of Azerbaijani Linguistics at the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute. In 1979, he was elected head of the department. From 1968 to 1981, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Philology and from 1981 to 1989 as Rector of the institute.
Contributions to Linguistics
Gurbanli is recognized as the founder of the onomastic scientific school in Azerbaijan. He has authored nearly 500 scientific publications, including 70 books. His studies on the history, structure, and development of the Azerbaijani language have made a significant contribution to the field of linguistics.
Honors and Recognition
In 1983, Gurbanli was elected Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. He has received numerous awards and honors for his scholarly achievements, including the Order of Friendship of Peoples.
