Agathon: Alexander the Great's Trusted Commander

Early Life

Agathon's origins lie in Macedonia, and he commanded the Odrysian cavalry from Thrace during Alexander the Great's reign (334-323 BC).

Military Career

Between 334 and 330/327 BC, Agathon led the cavalry of Thrace alongside Sitalces and Karanos. He played a crucial role in the battles of Granicus and Gaugamela, positioned on the left wing. While accounts of Gaugamela refer to Agathon's units as "Odrysians," historians believe he commanded the entire Thracian cavalry.

Exbatana Incident

In 330 BC, Agathon remained in Ecbatana with Parmenion, Cleander, Heracon, and Sitalces. He became involved in the plot to eliminate Parmenion.

Downfall and Execution

Upon Alexander's return from India in 325/324 BC, he accused Agathon of mismanagement. Agathon, Heracon, Cleander, and Sitalces confronted the king in Carmania, where they were arrested. It is believed that they were later executed.
