The Siberian Hermit
Early Life and IsolationAgafya Lykova was born into a family of Old Believer sect members who fled to the remote depths of the Siberian taiga to escape religious persecution. Her father, Karp Osipovich Lykov, and mother, Akulina Karpovna, raised their children in complete isolation from civilization, beginning in the late 1930s. After 1946, the family settled on the banks of the Erina River, a tributary of the Abakan.
The Lykov Family
Agafya had three siblings: Savin, Natalia, and Dimitri. As the most literate of the family, she was responsible for conducting religious services in the absence of a priest. Her mother, Akulina, passed away in 1961.
Discovery and Hardship
In 1978, geologists exploring the area stumbled upon the Lykovs' secluded homestead. At the time, the family consisted of five members. Tragedy struck the family in the following years as Dimitri died in 1981, Savin in December of the same year, and Natalia just ten days later.
Life with Her Father
For seven years, Agafya lived alone with her father, Karp, until his passing in 1988. She briefly joined an Old Believer monastery in 1990 but returned to her homestead within a few months, citing health and doctrinal differences.
Modern Life and Isolation
Since then, Agafya has lived almost exclusively on the Lykov homestead. Numerous travelers, journalists, writers, and religious figures have visited her over the years. She has also received support from monastic novices and volunteers who assist with her daily life.
Spiritual Beliefs
Agafya Lykova follows the teachings of her Old Believer faith, believing that solitude away from human society is essential for both physical and spiritual well-being. She rejects many cultural and societal norms introduced after the reign of Peter the Great.
