Early Life and EducationAgatha Barbara was born in Żabbar, Malta, on 11 March 1923. She pursued a career in education, teaching from 1942 to 1947.
Political Career
Early Involvement and Parliamentary ServiceBarbara entered politics in 1946 by joining the Labour Party. In 1947, she became the first woman elected to Malta's House of Representatives. She served as an MP for all subsequent parliamentary terms until her voluntary retirement in 1982.
Ministerial Positions
In 1955, Barbara became Malta's first female minister, holding the portfolio of Education and Culture. She implemented educational reforms to make it more accessible to the masses. As Minister of Education and Culture again in 1971, she focused on technical education and cultural modernization.
Labor and Social Security
From 1974 to 1981, Barbara served as Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security (later Labor, Social Security, and Culture). She strengthened social protections for workers and reduced unemployment.
Presidency
Resolving the Constitutional CrisisIn 1981, Malta faced a constitutional crisis after the Nationalist Party won more votes but fewer parliamentary seats than the Labour Party. Barbara became President of Malta on 15 February 1982. She played a crucial role in resolving the conflict and restoring stability.
Later Life and Legacy
Barbara retired from the presidency in 1987 and returned to her hometown, where she passed away in 2002.
