George Vella: A Distinguished Political Figure and Statesman
Early Life and EducationGeorge Vella was born in Żejtun, Malta, in 1942. He earned his medical degree in 1964 and specialized in family medicine, also obtaining a certificate in aviation medicine from Farnborough, United Kingdom.
Entry into Politics
Vella's political journey began when he joined the Labour Party. He was elected to Parliament in 1978 and went on to serve several terms, representing both the 3rd and 5th districts.
Leadership Roles
In 1992, Vella was appointed Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson for the Labour Party. He also served as Deputy Chairman of the EU/Malta Joint Parliamentary Committee.
Service Abroad
Vella's international experience includes serving as Deputy Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 1978 and as Malta's Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe in 1987.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister
Vella held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Environment twice: from 1996 to 1998 and from 2013 to 2017. During these tenures, he advocated for a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly.
Presidency
In 2019, Vella was elected as the 10th President of Malta in an uncontested election. He was sworn into office on April 4, 2019.
Personal Life
Vella is married to Miriam (née Grima) and has two daughters and a son, as well as seven grandchildren.
