Early Life and Education

Marion Anderson, an acclaimed American soprano, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Despite graduating from Greeley Teacher's College, she initially pursued a career as a physical education teacher in Denver. Her passion for music eventually led her to singing lessons, performances in restaurants and churches, and a regional singing competition she won in 1927. This triumph granted her admission to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, where she graduated in 1934.

Musical Career

Anderson's post-graduation years were marked by extensive concertizing. In 1935, she performed for royalty in London, and two years later, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Elsa in Wagner's "Lohengrin." Anderson also premiered the title role in Walter Damrosch's revised opera "Cyrano de Bergerac" in 1941. Notably, her discography includes a renowned recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski in 1934.

Later Years and Legacy

After retiring from performing in 1950, Anderson dedicated her time to teaching at Indiana University's School of Music, where she became a professor in 1963. Her exceptional career earned her numerous accolades and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.
