Agostino Depretis: A Three-Time Italian Prime Minister
Agostino Depretis was an Italian politician and statesman who served as Prime Minister of Italy three times during his career.
Early Life and Political Beginnings
Depretis was born on January 31, 1813, in Bressana Bottarone. He earned a law degree in Turin and practiced advocacy before entering politics in 1848. He was elected as a deputy and joined the oppositional "left" party, advocating for moderate reforms. He founded the newspaper "Progresso," which was later replaced by "Diritto."
Government Roles and the Unification of Italy
Depretis played a crucial role in Italy's unification movement. In 1859, he was appointed Governor of Brescia by Camillo Benso di Cavour. In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi appointed him to lead Sicily as a dictator. However, Depretis's attempts to reconcile Garibaldi's policies with Cavour's were met with resistance, and he was forced to leave Sicily in September 1860.
Ministerial Positions and Leadership
After the unification of Italy, Depretis held several ministerial positions, including Minister of Public Works, Minister of the Navy, and Minister of Finance. In 1873, he became the leader of the parliamentary left faction and Prime Minister for the first time in 1876.
Prime Ministerial Tenure and Transformism
Depretis's first tenure as Prime Minister lasted until 1878. He returned to the premiership twice more, from 1878 to 1879 and from 1880 to 1887. During these terms, he pursued a strategy known as "transformism," in which he sought to build a stable government majority by appealing to both the left and right parties.
Foreign Policy and Internal Reforms
In foreign policy, Depretis aligned Italy closely with Germany and Austria in accordance with King Umberto I's wishes. He also achieved significant internal reforms, such as abolishing forced currency, reducing taxes on flour, expanding the railway network, and implementing electoral reforms.
Legacy
Depretis's policy of transformism was criticized for weakening parliamentary parties and hindering the development of constitutional institutions. However, he is credited with advancing Italy's economic and political development through his domestic reforms. Agostino Depretis died on July 29, 1887, leaving a lasting impact on Italian politics.
