Early Life and Education
Akhmet Salemkhanovich Kulenov was born in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, to a family of high-ranking officials. However, his father was arrested and repressed in 1937. From 1943 to 1951, Akhmet grew up in an orphanage in the village of Kaskelen.
In 1956, Akhmet graduated from the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgy Institute (now Satbayev University) with a degree in Metallurgy of Non-Ferrous Metals.
Career in Metallurgy
Upon graduation, Akhmet began his career at the Ust-Kamenogorsk Lead and Zinc Plant as a worker. Due to his ingenuity, enthusiasm, and hard work, he quickly rose through the ranks to become a shift supervisor, technologist, shop manager, chief engineer, and eventually director of the plant.
In 1992, he became president of the plant and spearheaded a comprehensive reconstruction program. The plant became unparalleled in the USSR in terms of technological advancements and waste recycling.
Akhmet's vision to create a closed production cycle for gold and silver on the plant's premises enabled Kazakhstan to emerge as a major gold producer and supplier on the London market.
Achievements and Innovations
Throughout his career, Akhmet authored over 130 scientific papers, obtained 100 patents, and submitted 140 rationalization proposals. His contributions to the field of metallurgy earned him membership in the Engineering Academy of Kazakhstan and the State Prize of Kazakhstan.
Political Career
In 1995, Akhmet was elected to the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, where he served on the Committee for International Affairs, Defense, and Security.
Teaching and Later Career
From 1999, Akhmet headed the Altyn Aymak Mining and Metallurgical Plant. In 2007, he began teaching at Satbayev University as a professor in the Department of Chemistry, Metallurgy, and Mineral Processing.
