Biography of Francisco Morazán

Francisco Morazán was a prominent political and military leader in Central America. He was born into a creole family of French Antillean descent in Honduras. Morazán became the leader of the liberal party in the Federation of the United Provinces of Central America.

Leadership and Reforms

In 1828-29, Morazán led an army that overthrew conservative governments in Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, paving the way for the rise of liberal factions in these countries. In 1830, he was elected as the president of the federation.

During his presidency, Morazán implemented several progressive reforms. He secularized church lands, declared freedom of religion, and supported the development of industry, trade, and the construction of schools.

Downfall and Exile

In 1838, conservative forces rose up against Francisco Morazán, leading to the dissolution of the federation in 1839. Fleeing from his enemies, Morazán went into exile in New Granada (now Panama) and later in Peru.

In 1840, Morazán made an attempt to restore the federation. Leading an army, he invaded Costa Rica but suffered a defeat. He was subsequently arrested and, on September 15, 1842, was executed by firing squad.

Despite his ultimate downfall, Francisco Morazán is remembered as a progressive leader who implemented significant reforms in Central America, promoting secularism, freedom of religion, and advancements in education, industry, and trade.
