Ahmed Nazif: Biography of an Egyptian Prime Minister

Ahmed Nazif was born on July 8, 1953, in Alexandria, Egypt. He was born into a wealthy family, his father being a successful shipowner named Mahmoud Nazif. After completing his schooling, Ahmed Nazif enrolled in the Faculty of Electronics and Communications at Cairo University. Following his graduation, he remained at the university as a faculty member and eventually became a professor of the Faculty of Engineering.

From Academia to Politics

It was not entirely unexpected for Nazif to enter politics since his grandfather, Mohammed Bey Nazif, had previously served as the Deputy Minister of Health during the reign of King Farouk. At the beginning of his political career, Ahmed Nazif was appointed as the Minister of Communication and Information Technology in Atef Obeida's government. In June 2004, Obeida was forced to resign due to pressure from business circles dissatisfied with the pace of privatization in the country. Egypt needed a new Prime Minister - someone young and energetic. It was then decided to offer this position to the 50-year-old former professor from Cairo University, Ahmed Nazif. It is worth noting that this educational institution is a true "breeding ground" for the Egyptian government's cadre: Nazif's successor, Atef Obeida, was also his professor.

A Young and Energetic Prime Minister

Ahmed Nazif became one of the youngest Prime Ministers in the history of modern Egypt. He officially took office on July 14, 2004. Nazif gathered like-minded individuals around him, primarily technocrats and neoliberals. According to Egyptian media reports, Ahmed Nazif's cabinet became the wealthiest in the last hundred years. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Nazif managed to address the issue of low tax collection rates by initiating amendments to the tax legislation. His cabinet significantly reduced inflation rates and achieved constitutional reforms in the country. Nazif made a significant personal contribution to expanding the influence of information technology by initiating the mandatory teaching of computer skills in secondary schools. All schools in Egypt now have access to free Internet, thanks to Nazif's efforts.

A Reputation of Integrity and Liberalism

Ahmed Nazif is known for his reputation as an honest and liberal politician. Interestingly, his name translates to "pure" in Arabic. In November 2008, he visited Russia for a four-day visit and held negotiations with the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.

Ahmed Nazif is married and has two adult sons, although they have no current plans to pursue a career in politics.
