Ahn Hyun Soo, also known as Victor An, is a renowned South Korean short track speed skater. He was born on November 23, 1985, in Seoul, South Korea. Ahn is a three-time Olympic champion (2006) and a five-time overall world champion (2003-2007) in short track speed skating. He has also won the World Cup twice.

Early Career

Ahn Hyun Soo made his mark in the world of short track speed skating at a young age. In 2002, at the age of 16, he won his first medals at the World Championships in Montreal. Despite participating in the 2002 Winter Olympics, he returned without any medals, finishing fourth in the 1000m event.

Dominance in Short Track Speed Skating

Throughout his career, Ahn Hyun Soo has collected over 30 medals at the World Championships, including an impressive 20 gold medals. He became the absolute world champion for five consecutive years. He also excelled at the Winter Asian Games, winning a total of five gold medals (2003 and 2007), and the Winter Universiade in 2005, where he claimed three gold medals.

Olympic Success

Ahn Hyun Soo became one of the standout athletes at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He, along with German biathlete Michael Greis and young Korean short track skater Jin Sun Yoo, won three gold medals. Additionally, Ahn also won a bronze medal in an individual event, making him the only athlete among the three to achieve this feat.

Setback and Change of Nationality

In early 2008, Ahn Hyun Soo suffered a severe knee injury, which forced him to miss significant competitions from 2008 to 2009. He attempted to earn a spot on the Korean national team for the 2010 Winter Olympics but was unsuccessful. However, on August 15, 2011, the Russian Skating Union announced that they had filed a request, together with the Russian Ministry of Sports, for Ahn to be granted Russian citizenship. Ahn had been training with the Russian team since June 2011, learning the Russian language, and intended to permanently relocate to Russia.

Continuation of Career in Russia

If Ahn Hyun Soo were to obtain Russian citizenship, he would become the only three-time Winter Olympic champion continuing his career in Russia.
