Amy Jones: The eBay Yellow Skater Dress Incident

Amy Jones, a British woman, decided to sell a fairly ordinary yellow dress on an online auction platform. She hoped to receive just 16 pounds sterling for it. Online auctions are a great way to not only get rid of things that you no longer need, but also to make a little extra money. Old but still functional ice skates, sturdy army boots ready to serve for a few more years, and barely worn dresses - there are always hunters looking for these specific items and willing to purchase them at a price below market value. Amy Jones planned to sell her fairly ordinary yellow dress and hoped to get just 16 pounds sterling for it. It seemed like nothing unexpected could happen - Amy took a photo of her product, created a listing on eBay, attached the photo she took, and started waiting for offers. Little did Jones know the sensation her picture would cause. No, the dress itself looked quite decent in the photograph; however, Amy didn't notice that the hanging mirror in the room was also captured in the frame - and it reflected her partially naked self. To her misfortune, the picture Jones took ended up on the internet, revealing more than she intended. Realizing that it was her own doing that got her image online, Jones quickly wrote a letter to eBay and uploaded a new image to the listing, this time fully clothed but in the exact same pose. Unfortunately, stopping the spread of the unfortunate photo proved to be not so easy; someone on the website noticed what she was wearing in the background, and the image went viral. Jones herself was initially quite shocked by what happened, but interestingly, her boyfriend, Andy, took it much more calmly and humorously. It seems that Amy herself managed to recover from the initial shock - one can judge by the fact that the new dress photo was taken in the exact same pose as the original one. Interestingly, the incident did bring some benefits to Amy Jones in the end - the fateful dress was eventually sold at auction for 56 pounds, which was 3.5 times higher than the initial price set by the young woman. In reality, the price for the updated listing soared to an unrealistic level of over 150,000 pounds; however, Amy understood that she was unlikely to receive this amount in reality and relisted the item for auction. It is likely that the buzz around Amy Jones' name will soon die down - although even now, there are several thousand tweets under the hashtag 'ebayyellowskaterdress'.
