Pomponia Caecilia Attica
Pomponia Caecilia was the daughter of the equestrian Titus Pomponius Atticus, a friend of Cicero, and Caecilia Pilia, who descended from the patrician Licinii Crassi. Upon her father's adoption by his uncle, Quintus Caecilius, in 65 BC, her name changed from Pomponia to Caecilia, according to Roman custom. She was often referred to by both names.
Early Life and Education
Caecilia was the second of two children, having an older brother. She received a good education, and rumors circulated of an improper relationship between her and her tutor, though there is no evidence to support this.
Marriage to Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa
Around 37 BC, Pomponia Caecilia married Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, a close friend and associate of Octavian Augustus, 12 years her senior. This was a highly advantageous marriage for a girl from a modest background, as Octavian was grooming Agrippa as his successor. The marriage was arranged with the help of Mark Antony.
Birth of Vipsania Agrippina
In 36 BC, Pomponia gave birth to Agrippa's first child, a girl named Vipsania Agrippina, who later became the first wife of Octavian's stepson, Tiberius.
Agrippa's Second Marriage
In 28 BC, Agrippa married his second wife, Claudia Marcella Major. The fate of Pomponia Caecilia at this time is unknown; she may have been divorced or have died the previous year.
