Formative Years and Military EducationGeneral Akiyama Yoshifuru was born in 1859 in Japan. He embarked on a military career and went on to become the architect of modern Japanese cavalry. In 1887, he was sent to France to study advanced military techniques.
Military Career: Russo-Japanese War and Beyond
During the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), Akiyama commanded the 1st Cavalry Division. In 1901-1903, he led the Garrison Army in China.
Akiyama played a pivotal role in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), commanding the 1st Independent Cavalry Brigade within the 2nd Japanese Army. He saw action at the Battle of Wafangou. Later in the war, he was responsible for protecting the left flank of the Japanese armies, leading a mixed force of cavalry and infantry.
Post-War Career: Leadership and Inspectorate
After the Russo-Japanese War, Akiyama held various posts. From 1916-1917, he commanded the Korean Garrison. He also led the Guards Division and became the Chief Inspector of Combat Training in 1920.
Retirement and Legacy
General Akiyama retired from military service in 1923.
