Biography of Akop Akopyan

Akop Akopyan, an Armenian artist, was born on May 24, 1923, in Alexandria, Egypt. His family had moved there to escape the massacre of 1915. At the age of 9, his parents sent him to an Armenian school in Cyprus. In 1941, he returned to Alexandria and started working in a textile factory to support his family. After three years, Akop moved to Cairo, where he worked as a designer and enrolled in the Cairo Royal Academy of Fine Arts. It was during this time that his passion for painting awakened, and in 1952, he went to study in Paris, the Mecca of artists, where he graduated from the Grand Chaumier Academy.

In 1953, during the World Festival of Youth and Students held in Bucharest, a painting exhibited under the pseudonym Emil won the second prize. The author of the painting was Akop Akopyan, and he donated it to the Soviet delegation.

It took nine years for Akop Akopyan and his family to be able to relocate to their true homeland, Armenia. Since 1962, he has been living in Leninakan. In 1967, Akop was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR, and in 1977, he was awarded the State Prize of Armenia and the title of People's Artist of the Republic. In 1987, he received the State Prize of the USSR for creating a series of high-artistic watercolors.

He found inspiration in the Armenian landscape, which he saw as steep, uplifting, and filled with lines that reflected the character of the lively and joyful people. Initially, it was challenging for him to adapt his style to the Armenian landscape, as his own nature was different. He began searching for landscapes that matched his temperament and constructed them using a horizontal-vertical linear scheme to convey a calm and static state.
