François Cheng: French Poet and Scholar
Education and BackgroundFrançois Cheng graduated from the National School of Oriental Languages in Paris and earned a doctorate in Literature from the University of Paris VII.
Academic Career
In 1973, Cheng relocated to Brest, France, where he became a professor of Japanese language and literature at the University of Western Brittany. Throughout his career, he translated numerous classical and contemporary works, including traditional poetry and haiku.
Collaboration and Awards
As part of the collective "Tro Breizh, en notre faim, notre commencement", Cheng contributed to the publication of "Skol Vreizh" (2001), and in 2004, he received the "Ginyū Haiku" award, recognizing his exceptional mastery of the genre.
Educational Initiatives
To foster the appreciation of haiku, Cheng translated a Japanese teaching guide for children into Breton ("Koroll an haïku", 1999) and French ("La ronde des haïku", 2004). He also organized courses and workshops on the art of haiku.
