Early Life and Club Career

Alan A'Court was an English footballer who played as a midfielder, primarily for Liverpool Football Club. Born in Rainhill, a suburb of St. Helens in Merseyside, he began his career with amateur club Prescot Cables.

In September 1952, A'Court was signed by Liverpool manager Don Welsh, who had scouted him ahead of rival clubs Bolton Wanderers and Everton. He made his debut on February 7, 1953, in a 3-2 away win over Middlesbrough. His first goal for Liverpool came in a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Anfield on March 14.

International Career

Despite playing for a Second Division club, A'Court caught the attention of England manager Walter Winterbottom, who was seeking a replacement for the injured Tom Finney. He made his international debut in a British Home Championship match against Northern Ireland at Wembley. Although England lost the match 3-2, A'Court scored a goal and was included in the squad for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. He played in all three of England's matches at the tournament.

Liverpool Success and Return to the First Division

A'Court's loyalty to Liverpool was rewarded when, under the guidance of legendary manager Bill Shankly, the club won the Second Division championship in 1962. The Reds returned to the First Division, where A'Court played 23 matches in their eighth-place finish.

Injury and Departure

A'Court's career was unfortunately plagued by injuries, which prevented him from playing during the 1963-64 season when Liverpool won the English league title. Shankly signed Peter Thompson from Preston North End, and A'Court, who had spent his entire professional career with Liverpool, was allowed to leave the club.

His final game for the Reds was a historic European Cup home debut against KR Reykjavik, which Liverpool won 6-1.

Post-Liverpool Career

In October 1964, A'Court joined Tranmere Rovers for a fee of £4,500. He later served as player-manager of Norwich City and held coaching positions worldwide, including stints in Zambia, New Zealand, and at Stoke City, where he briefly became caretaker manager. His final role was as assistant manager at Crewe Alexandra.

After retiring from football, A'Court owned a tobacconist's and newsagent's shop in Bebington, Merseyside.
