Presidency and Exile
On July 28, 1985, at the age of thirty-five, Garcia was elected as the President of the Republic of Peru. In January 2001, after the corruption charges against him were dropped, Garcia returned to Peru and became the leader of the parliamentary opposition. He participated in the 2001 presidential elections as a candidate from the Peruvian Aprista Party, receiving forty-seven percent of the popular vote.
Later Career
In 2004, Garcia took on the role of President of the Peruvian Aprista Party. He currently holds the honorary position of President of the International Socialists. Additionally, he served as the Director of the Institute of Government at the University of San Martin de Porres.
