Biography of Alan Henderson Gardiner

Alan Henderson Gardiner was an English Egyptologist and linguist who made significant contributions to the theory of the Egyptian language. His work "Egyptian Grammar: An Introduction to the Study of Hieroglyphs" remains a standard reference grammar to this day. Building on the achievements of Berlin Egyptologist representatives Adolf Erman and Kurt Sethe, Gardiner systematized knowledge of the Egyptian language and published the "Egyptian Grammar" in 1927, which combined comprehensive grammatical material with accessible explanations and exercises.

Contributions to Egyptian Philology

Gardiner actively participated in the creation of the fundamental "Berlin Dictionary of the Egyptian Language." Considering the interpretation of Egyptian texts as one of the main tasks of Egyptian philology, he published and commented on numerous valuable monuments. His research on Egyptian "onomastica" (see Ramesseum Onomasticon) helped determine the meaning of many Egyptian words and made a significant contribution to the study of the historical geography of Ancient Egypt.
