Alan Hollinghurst is an English novelist born in 1954 in Stroud, Gloucestershire. He received his education at Magdalen College, Oxford. After completing his studies, Hollinghurst worked as a deputy editor for the literary supplement of The Times for nearly 13 years, starting in 1982.
Literary Career
Hollinghurst's literary career began in 1988 with the publication of his first novel, "The Swimming Pool." This novel explored the lives of the gay community in London and was well-received, earning him the Somerset Maugham Award in the following year. In 1994, he published a sequel to his debut novel titled "The Folding Star."
In 1995, Hollinghurst was recognized as the "Best Young British Novelist." However, it was his novel "The Line of Beauty" that brought him widespread acclaim and recognition. Published in 2004, this book won the prestigious Booker Prize, making Hollinghurst the first recipient of the prize for a work that delves into such delicate themes. The novel portrays the close relationship between an Oxford graduate and a cocaine-addicted millionaire, offering a vivid and sarcastic portrayal of the mores of the 1980s.
Booker Prize Recognition
The decision to award "The Line of Beauty" the Booker Prize was not an easy one for the jury. The chairman of the jury, Christopher Smith, a former Minister of Culture in the Conservative government, shared that it was exceptionally challenging. After two hours of deliberation, they concluded that Hollinghurst's novel was "brilliantly written with a generous dose of sarcasm, representing the manners of the 1980s."
