Biography of Alan Lloyd Hodgkin
Alan Lloyd Hodgkin was a British neurophysiologist and biophysicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1963.
Education and Early Life
Hodgkin received his education at Malvern School (1923-1927), Holt School (1927-1932), and Trinity College, Cambridge (1932-1936). With his grandfather, Thomas Hodgkin, and uncle, Robin Hodgkin, being renowned historians, Alan initially struggled to choose between history and natural sciences when deciding on his major. Eventually, his interest in the natural sciences prevailed. At Trinity College, his zoology professor, Carl Pantin, advised him to study seemingly unrelated subjects such as mathematics and physics.
Research and Contributions
In 1936, Hodgkin's scientific supervisor, A.V. Hill, sent a copy of his dissertation to Herbert Gasser, who invited the young scientist to work at the Rockefeller Institute. After returning to Cambridge in 1938, Hodgkin began collaborating with A. Huxley. However, their research was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, and Hodgkin served in the Royal Air Force from February 1940 to July 1945, working on radar systems for night bombers.
After the war, Hodgkin returned to Cambridge as a lecturer in the Department of Physiology. A few months later, his former colleague A. Huxley was demobilized from the army, and they resumed their interrupted research. R. Keynes joined them a year later, forming a small group dedicated to studying ion mechanisms in living cells. Their project received significant support from Lord Adrian, who secured subsidies from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Royal Society. Most of their experiments were conducted at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth, where Hodgkin spent two to three months each year starting from 1947.
Discoveries and Achievements
Hodgkin and his colleagues established that the action potential, which is an active electrical signal occurring during the excitation of nerve and muscle cells, not only neutralizes the resting potential but also greatly exceeds it. They deduced that this result could not solely be explained by the movement of potassium ions, suggesting the involvement of another ion, sodium. Furthermore, they demonstrated that altering the concentration of sodium outside the cell could modify the action potential. These findings led to the development of the membrane theory, a mathematical model describing the generation and propagation of nerve impulses.
For their discoveries regarding the ionic mechanisms of excitation and inhibition in peripheral and central areas of nerve cell membranes, Hodgkin, along with Andrew Huxley and John Eccles, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1963. Hodgkin was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1948 and held positions in various scientific societies and institutions throughout his career, including the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Marine Biological Association.
Later Life and Honors
Hodgkin held several prestigious positions, including being the president of the Marine Biological Association in 1966, the president of the Royal Society in 1970, and the chancellor of the University of Leicester in 1971. He was also an honorary member of the Danish Royal Academy of Sciences and Letters, a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, a member of the German Academy of Sciences "Leopoldina," an honorary member of the Indian National Science Academy, and an honorary doctor at the universities of Bern, Sheffield, Newcastle, Leicester, Manchester, and London.
Among his numerous awards, Hodgkin received the Royal Medal of the Royal Society in 1958 and the Copley Medal of the Royal Society in 1965.
Publications
Some of Hodgkin's notable publications include "Ionic Currents Underlying the Activity in the Giant Axon of the Squid" (with A. Huxley and B. Katz), published in the Archives of Science Physiology in 1949, and "The Conduction of the Nervous Impulse," a book published by Liverpool University Press in 1971.
