Early Life and Education
Seyfaddin Aliyev was born on May 30, 1930, in Alishar village, Sharur district, Azerbaijan SSR. In 1947, he graduated from the Nakhchivan Medical College. He went on to study at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute, graduating in 1951.
Career at the Institute of Zoology
Aliyev joined the Institute of Zoology under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) in 1952. He has held various positions, including Head of the Laboratory and Department of Entomology. In 2001, he was elected a Corresponding Member of ANAS, and in 2007, a Full Member.
Research on Noctuids
Aliyev's research focuses on the study of the noctuid moth family in the Transcaucasus region. He has identified and described 716 species and 84 forms of noctuids, of which 390 are new to the fauna of Azerbaijan, 145 to the Transcaucasus, and 67 to the USSR. He also discovered 61 species that are pests of agricultural crops.
Publications and Contributions
Aliyev has authored 168 scientific publications. He was a contributing author to Volume X of the Azerbaijan Encyclopedia, a textbook on zoology for secondary schools, and Volume II of "Animal World of Azerbaijan." He has also edited and translated a university textbook on invertebrate zoology.
Mentorship and Legacy
Aliyev has supervised the dissertations of six candidates of science and one doctor of science. He has played a significant role in training the next generation of entomologists in Azerbaijan.
Honors and Awards
Aliyev is a distinguished scientist and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of entomology. His work has had a major impact on the understanding of biodiversity and pest management in the Caucasus region.
